Learning Attitude

Article from Motorcycle Consumer NEWS

It can be difficult to find motivation to train for unlikely occurrences, but these rare occurrences are what turn into crashes unless you are prepared. Those who understand this reality are the ones who will survive the unexpected appearance of a left-hand turning car at an intersection or a sudden road hazard around a blind curve.

Do yourself and your love ones a favor and adopt a attitude to do all you can to be the best rider you can be. It's unfortunate that many  riders let the time and effort it takes to practice stop them from improving their skills. Fortunately, it doesn't take a lot of effort to increase proficiency. You just need about a half hour every couple of weeks and a place that is conducive to achieving your goals.

Emergency Braking

Most riders take their braking skills for granted. But, when it comes to braking in a panic situation, many riders fail to stop effectively. Thankfully, panic braking situations are relatively rare, but this can also make us complacent. To keep emergency braking skills sharp and ready for action, it is very important to practice so that your muscles will know exactly how much brake pressure to apply to stop in the shortest possible distance.

Braking in Corners

It's generally smart to avoid braking in turns, but it becomes necessary if a mid-corner hazard appears. Many riders never practice braking in turns, which is unfortunate, because many crashes could have been avoided had the rider been skilled at mid-corner braking techniques. Since you don't have enough traction to brake hard while leaned, you must learn to brake without causing a skid. There are two corner braking techniques: you can either straighten before applying the brakes or apply the brakes lightly at first and gradually apply more brake pressure as the bike straightens.

Swerving

Closely related to cornering is swerving. Swerving is a maneuver that is used in extreme conditions when emergency braking is not partial. It's very important to practice swerving so it becomes an automatic response, because you will not have time to think about how to swerve when a toolbox falls out of a pickup truck directly ahead of you

Practice Where?

Parking Lots:  Parking lot practice is the best way for both new and veteran riders to develop and refine skills. Not only are parking lots free from traffic and other roadway hazards, but also because parking lot speeds are relatively low, experimentation is less intimidating.

Colonoscopy

Article from Motorcycle Consumer NEWS

I'm not suggesting you give somebody a Colonoscopy--rather, if someone you care about who's over 50 hasn't had one, get on their case. For non-smokers, colon cancer is the most common cancer.  Unfortunately, it's painless, and if folks don't get checked, they don't know they've got it until it metastasizes and causes problems; or it obstructs the bowel; or if they bleed and get anemic; pr have blood in their stool

Persuading somebody to get this done could literally give them the gift of life. What better gift then that?

A Poem By James Marrow

Buffalo Soldiers They are called

From slave to soldier they were born

Their fight for freedom in a country torn

But the rights of freedom would be slow to come

White officers sent to command them

A degrading command many thought it would be

But, brave and dedicated soldiers, they found these men to be

The settlement west would make their name

Fighting Indians on the western plains

Fighting, and dying for land they could never claim

Fierce and bold fighters they were, the Plains Indians did see

They found the black skinned soldier, was a worthy adversary

Buffalo Soldier’s they would be named, by the Apache

Slowly the light shines upon their unknown bravery

Their burdens and their sacrifice, unknown today by many

These brave black skinned soldiers who wore the Union Blue

Buffalo Soldiers, They are called

Exhaust Pipe Cleaning

Article from Motorcycle Consumer NEWS

A more effective method of removing burned-on hydrocarbon material on exhaust pipes:  Easy Off oven cleaner or similar products.  These products are designed to lift off baked-on material with out any use of finish-damaging abrasives, and with a minimum of scrubbing if one is patient enough to actually follow directions.  I have seen it take off burned-on oil and burned-on plastic (a screwdriver handle) with this method very effectively.

Turning Terror

Article from Motorcycle Consumer NEWS

If the Bike doesn't want to turn, maybe it's your technique.

You've just bought a new bike, after 20 years of raising children and paying off mortgages.  You rode a dirt bike when you were younger, so it's not like you are a total novice.  But you're having trouble getting the big cruiser to turn into corners.  Today, you are turning from an arterial onto a narrow side street. You try to lean the bike exactly right, but it seems to want to go wide, and swings across the centerline before you can get it back onto your side of the road.  An oncoming car driver sees you coming, and jams on the brakes to avoid a collision.  But now you're even more nervous about getting the big beast to turn.

What you are discovering is that controlling a big motorcycle is much different from riding a lightweight dirt bike.  On a heavyweight, it's more important to steer the front wheel to control lean, not just shift your weight around in the saddle.  You need to momentarily steer opposite the way you want to lean, or what's called "countersteering." Once the bike begins to lean, you steer back toward center, or even slightly toward the direction of turn.

You might consider practicing some tight turns and figure-8s in a vacant parking lot to improve your countersteering technique and gain more control over your cornering.

Stress Tonic

By Dave Searle Motorcycle Consumer News December 2005

Take a Deep Breath and pay close attention to your lungs. Inhale deeply into your upper chest and see if your breath smoothly fills your chest.  Then blow it out between slightly pursed lips and note if you breath flows smoothly outward, with out a hitch or catch.

What is the best ride you can remember? It doesn't have to be a special place, or far away.  Not that kind of great ride. No, I am talking about the time when you and the bike simply moved as one, so that your transportation through space had an exquisite sense of swift relaxed control. That was the moment I actually caught myself and became aware of how the bike and I had become one.

Several times this year I've been complimented on my pace and had fellow riders say how much they enjoyed riding with me.  And although I am generally humbled by praise, I'm starting to think I'm on to something.  I like to set a pace that pays a plausible resemblance to the speed limits on the straight-aways, yet makes good fun of the corners and stretches between them without relying on blind faith.

When riding with others, the urge to ride over your head in an effort to show how fast you are should be avoided.  Full-throttle-to-redline acceleration, on even a mid sized bike is rarely needed, and you want to keep a pace that doesn't jeopardize anyone or make them feel like they are begging for a speeding citation just to keep up.  The presence of cross-traffic, driveways or any other opportunity for a collision is a sign to slowdown to a speed that can accommodate the unexpected,  Fellow riders will be grateful for your common sense, and will be more likely to trust your pace and enjoy the ride.

Ride swiftly to keep your concentration sharp, and ride smoothly with a sense of flowing speed. The rest just happens.

Blow Outs

By David L. Hough Motorcycle Consumer News October 2005

If you've ever had a sudden tire failure, you know how a bike can wiggle around and threaten to dump you on the pavement.  If you've never had a blowout at speed, consider yourself fortunate.  Remember a two-wheeler requires front wheel steering just to maintain balance.

If the problem is at the front, there will be an increased resistance to steering, and the bike will be more difficult to balance,  If it's a rear tire, the rear end will tend to waggle from side to side, requiring you to make increasingly more aggressive steering input to maintain control.

If you do feel something strange, you may have a few seconds to get the bike over to the side of the road.  It's smart to check out strange feedback immediately.

Ease off the throttle and get the bike pointed toward the shoulder of the road.  Don't snap the throttle closed or attempt to brake hard, since braking force causes the tire to wiggle around more on the rim.  It's best to squeeze the clutch and coast over toward the side of the road. With a deflated front tire the bike will not respond quickly to counter steering, but it will respond.

If you can, relax your sudden death grip on the bars and let the bike wander a bit--so long as it heads for the shoulder.  If the tire fails suddenly, the bike will instantly become unstable.  But if and when you do have a "blowout" some day, you may be somewhat amazed that the bike seems reasonably controllable at highway speed.  As the bike slows below about 40 mph, the centrifugal force dissipates and the tire can't hold its shape. Stay focused on getting the bike off the road, expecting it to get worse as you decelerate to slower speeds.  If a tire really has lost all its pressure, the bike will be darting from side to side between 30 mph and 20 mph and it will be every bit as scary as you've heard it would be.

The first part of a "blowout" is just keeping the bike under control and getting it off the road. The second part is just as important: Get the bike away from traffic while you work on the problem.  So during those last few feet of getting the bike stopped, get it away form the traffic lane.  Once the bike has come to a stop it will be difficult to move.  Don't abuse the tire any more than you have to.  The lesson here is that a damaged tire is just an inconvenience compared to being side-swiped by a curious driver, or blown over by the wind blast from a passing truck.
